Penang's rooftop bar scene is smaller and more understated than Kuala Lumpur's, but what it lacks in sheer height it makes up for in character. George Town, the island's UNESCO World Heritage capital, is a low-rise city of century-old shophouses and colonial architecture, so even a mid-rise hotel rooftop delivers sweeping views over red-tiled roofs, the Straits of Malacca, and the Penang Bridge stretching toward the mainland. The best venues cluster around the Komtar and Magazine Road area, where hotel towers offer some of George Town's only real elevation, alongside a handful of sky-high spots further out along Gurney Drive. Expect a more relaxed, less see-and-be-seen atmosphere than you'd find in KL or Singapore — Penang's rooftop bars lean into sunset cocktails, laid-back lounge music, and panoramas that take in both the historic core and the Andaman Sea beyond. Several venues double as dining rooms with international or Malaysian menus, making them just as suited to a sundown dinner as a late-night drink. Given Penang's reputation as Malaysia's food capital, it's no surprise the bar snacks and small plates at these elevated venues are consistently a highlight.
